Better health for fresh cows thanks to smaXtec

Fay Willow Farm in Wisconsin has made significant progress in monitoring the health of their fresh cows using smaXtec. Herd manager Tyler Duerst shares, “I am catching issues with fresh cows that I didn’t even know about before. There are cows with milk fever and ketosis that I wouldn’t have known about, and now I’m able to treat those cows and monitor the effects of the treatment with smaXtec.” In addition, they have also been able to detect and treat other diseases early with the help of smaXtec. “Also, smaXtec is catching cows with retained placentas and metritis – cows that I thought were cleaning fine – and I am able to treat those cows, and they are recovering without having to call the vet. I haven’t had to call the vet for a single fresh cow since I started using smaXtec,” he adds.

“We were surprised how much our herd health costs have gone down since switching to smaXtec."
Chad Butts from Willow Breeze Farm in Homer, New York, has been using the smaXtec system for two years on his 800-cow herd.

“We were surprised how much our herd health costs have gone down since switching to smaXtec. Annual herd health expenses are down 40% from where they were before smaXtec. We are treating fewer cows and are able to quickly assess the effectiveness of the treatment”, Chad reveals.

Lameness diagnosed at an early stage by the smaXtec system

With the help of smaXtec, lameness was detected. The cow only had an increased normal temperature, whereupon the farmer tested the milk for mastitis. However, the test was negative. In the evening, he then examined the cow’s hooves and eventually found the cause. If the customer had not discovered the lameness thanks to smaXtec, sole ulcers, sole tip ulcers and white line abscesses or purulent leather skin infections could have developed within a short time.
