Clear, practical insights on mastitis & more – thanks to the smaXtec Academy.
At Newfield Farm in Dumfriesshire, UK, farmer Owen Brown decided to install the smaXtec system in 2023 – looking after 122 cows with dedication and care.

When Owen Brown joined the smaXtec academy, he quickly discovered how much easier it became to dive deeper into complex health topics:
“The smaXtec academy provides in-depth knowledge on a range of subjects surrounding cow welfare and health. The courses are well-structured and easy to follow, making complex topics such as mastitis understandable.”

When knowledge and technology go hand in hand, both farmers and cows thrive.
“It is a really useful tool for helping to get the most out of our smaXtec system,” Owen Brown states.

Picking up Pneumonia early, preventing serious health issues.
David Thompson runs a dairy farm with 300 cows, where he installed the smaXtec system in early June 2024, just before the calving season began. This decision quickly paid off, particularly when it came to monitoring the health and reproduction of his herd.
By separating his young cows – those in their first lactation –from the main herd, the farmer noticed an immediate improvement in rumination times, reduced stress during mating and more accurate timing for inseminations.
“Having the data coming through for the first time without having to do all the hard work takes a lot of stress off, especially with mating. It’s made a real difference in how I manage my herd,” the farmer says.

The smaXtec system enabled David Thompson to quickly identify health issues, when one cow showed temperature alerts, prompting him to call his vet. The vet diagnosed pneumonia early.
“I wouldn’t have known otherwise. It picked it up 3-4 days earlier than I would have noticed,” the farmer explains.

smaXtec customers Rebecca & Brett Symes
success-stories
Not a single cow was lost during the entire calving period –
a huge win for animal welfare and farm efficiency.

At B & R Dairy Ltd., New Zealand, the owners Rebecca & Brett Symes have seen remarkable results since introducing smaXtec to their farm.
The smaXtec calving alerts proved to be an essential tool: “Utilising smaXtec has significantly improved this year’s calving management. Especially the calving alerts have been invaluable in identifying cows that are more challenging to detect in the paddock, allowing us to monitor and ensure no recent calvings are overlooked.”

Not only the calving alert, but also the early detection of diseases such as milk fever, ketosis, or mastitis has transformed the farmers’ daily work, especially as winter milkers, when mastitis cases are more common. “The temperature alerts have been a game-changer. This past season, smaXtec’s temperature alerts have given us the ability to pick up mastitis cows early without the need to strip the herd”, so Rebecca Symes.

Early intervention meant zero losses during calving – a major success for herd health and performance. While they’ve always managed a strong somatic cell count, their results this year speak for themselves: “Thanks to the help of smaXtec we’ve just achieved the 9th lowest cell count among all Open Country suppliers in New Zealand.”
