Since implementing smaXtec in April 2021, Stu and Sara Russell from Ashburton, New Zealand, have seen remarkable progress in their cow fertility rates. “Over the past two years, we’ve experienced significant gains in getting our cows pregnant. This improvement has been invaluable to our farm’s productivity,” Sara Russell reveals. And the results speak for themselves: while the in-calf rate in 2021 for more than 9 weeks was still at 84%, the rate has now increased to 92%. That’s an improvement of 8%!

After the calving alert, a smaXtec farmer monitored the cow closely and quickly noticed that the labour was not progressing correctly. He immediately called the vet who delivered a heavy calf of 73 kilos by caesarean section. It weighed a good 30 kilos more than an average calf. Cow and calf were both well again shortly afterwards. It was particularly helpful for the farmer to see how rumination developed after calving. This allowed him to support her with a calcium-rich energy drink.

A smaXtec customer received several alerts about the drinking behaviour and rumination of a number of cows. However, the animals showed no signs of a health problem. After a thorough check, she then discovered that the trip switch in the water pump was broken and the trough was not filling. If the problem had remained undetected for longer, this would lead to a stress situation for the cows. Without sufficient access to water, they consume less feed, their activity decreases, they become more susceptible to diseases and their milk yield falls as a result. Fortunately, thanks to smaXtec, this did not happen!
